Introduction

The new lab share is hosted on our lab server, and is meant to centralize all of our data storage.

Why should you use it?

  • Space: The lab share is currently backed by a 33 TB storage array, meaning that it has more capacity than any other storage medium that we have access to.
  • Resilience: The lab share is backed by RAID arrays and backed up to the cloud on a nightly basis.
  • Accessibility: The lab share is usable from both Windows and Linux (and probably MacOS, although this hasn’t been tested).
  • Speed: The share is hosted locally on the lab server, and can handle more IO throughput than most other storage options.

Getting Access to the Share

To use the share, you have to first be granted access. This is a one-time operation. In order to get access, please send an email to daniel.petti@uga.edu including the following information:

  • Your username on the server, if you have an account.

Changing your Password

Though your SMB access is tied to a user account on the server, your SMB password is separate from your account password. When you are first given access, a default password will be set for you. Please change this password at your earliest possible convenience.

To change your password, first log into the server, and run the following command:

smbpasswd

You will have to enter the original password and then a new password. Once you do this, log out and you should be all set.

Connecting to the Share

To connect to the share, you will either need to be connected to the UGA network, or to the VPN. Note that at this time, connecting from the “PAWS-Secure” network does not seem to work without the VPN.

Connecting from Ubuntu/Mac

  1. Open the file manager.
  2. Select “Other Locations” on the left.
  3. In the address bar, enter “smb://username@bsailn1.engr.uga.edu/bsail/”, substituting your username on the server, and click connect.
  4. You will be asked to enter your password. Enter the SMB password that you set.screenshot of the connection process in the Ubuntu file manager

Connecting from Windows

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Select “This PC” on the left, then click “Map Network Drive” in the “Computer” tab at the top.
  3. Enter “\\bsailn1.engr.uga.edu\bsail” as the folder location. Make sure to check the “Connect using different credentials” option.
  4. After clicking “Finish”, it will ask you to enter credentials. Enter your username on the server and your SMB password.
